A tattoo staying vivid for years depends largely on tattoo aftercare. Here's a step-by-step roadmap for the first 15 days after the session.
The First 24 Hours
The covering (film/bandage) applied by your artist should stay on for the recommended duration. After removing it, wash your hands and gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a pH-balanced soap.
Days 2–7
- Wash gently 2–3 times a day.
- Apply a thin layer of moisturizer/aftercare cream.
- Don't scratch and don't pick at scabs.
- Avoid direct sun and pools/the sea.
Days 8–15
During this period, flaking and itching are normal. Keep moisturizing and never scratch. As the skin completes its renewal, the tattoo may look matte; this is temporary.
What to Avoid
- Very hot showers and saunas
- Pools, the sea, bathtubs (until fully healed)
- Tight, rubbing clothing
- Unprotected sun exposure
